In the cradle of the industrial revolution

I am grateful to Maria at American Metal Market , for sending me a link to an article that appeared in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, written by David Bear. If you ever get to the UK David, I would gladly be your guide to Ironbridge for the day.

Lock up your Steel, thieves take weighty haul

Thieves who stole more than 200 bars of steel from a South Tyneside engineering company are being sought by police.
The metal, weighing a total of 26 tons and valued at £21,000, was taken from the compound of Simco Engineering on the Simonside Industrial estate.
Each bar weighs 200 kilos, and police say a crane or a [...]

Jobs safeguarded as coal pit sold

Nearly 500 jobs have been safeguarded after one of the UK’s last remaining deep coal mines was sold.
Maltby Colliery, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, has been sold by UK Coal to one of its biggest customers, Hargreaves Services, for £21.5m.

As an ex Rotherham lad, I am pleased to see that Maltby colliery [...]

We got snow

The West Midlands is grinding to a halt (well the schools have shut anyway!), due to snow. Since we hardly ever get any these days, it’s quite a novelty.
My garden at coffee time this morning :

Fine blanking

I came across a nice resource on fine blanking. A specialist technique for producing components from steel strip in the pressings or stampings industry, it’s well worth bookmarking.
By way of an introduction:-
Fineblanking, as a process, is a marriage of a very specific type of hydraulic press that has three motions and specially designed tooling. The combination of [...]

Mixed News on UK manufacturing?

It really depends which news story you are reading.
For instance a headline over at the Manufacturer.com reads
UK manufacturing loses 8000 jobs in January.
According to research by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) these worrying figures show the fragile state of an industry which is facing a number of difficult challenges including dealing with the negative [...]

I don’t care about Vista

With all thats happening in the Steel Industry, I forgot about Uncle Bill’s new Vista operating system. I must confess to not being overly excited, and share the views of Peter over at Blog.V7
It makes me tired even mentioning the name “Vista”. I know nothing about it, and hopefully won’t have to know anything [...]

My new baby!

Just arrived!
I was getting all jealous over Paul’s toys so I decided to treat myself (having received mainly sensible Christmas pressies).
I had intended to get a digital SLR, until I saw a review on this little baby.
A quick scour of t’internet and I found a good price with next day delivery guaranteed , a promise [...]

Peugeot Closes Ryton Plant

Although we have known of the impending closure for some while and the last car “rolled off” the production line on the 12th of December, it is today that the plant officially closes.
We have heard the last roar of the lion at Ryton and it’s a sad day for Coventry.

On the day Peugeot close [...]

Rosie the Riveter better watch out… I’M in the game now!!!

Spotted by Paul over at the Tinbasher it seems that a member of the fairer sex has not only joined the the metal bashing industry but is blogging about it too. To quote the tag line:
I am a woman entering into the Sheet Metal Industry… in other words I make duct! This is my journey (as [...]
