More on Corus closures in Netherlands

Dutch unions are angry about reorganisation plans at the Anglo-Dutch steelworks company Corus. On Monday, the company announced 3,500 job losses across the globe, 800 of them in the Dutch town of Ijmuiden on the coast. Corus says it hopes the company can avoid compulsory redundancies by retraining employees and introducing outplacement programmes.
The Netherlands two largest unions, the FNV and the CNV and the company’s works council believe it is not a good idea to cut jobs, and say they will not accept compulsory redundancies. The unions do accept that Corus has been hit hard by the economic crisis. Demand for steel and the price of steel have plummeted. Corus says it does not expect the situation to change and structural measures are unavoidable.

As previously reported the worst hit sites in the UK are Rotherham  (750 jobs), and Llanwern (600 jobs)
