STEEL GIANT IS FACING HEAVY FINE
Steelmaker Corus faces a heavy fine after admitting its negligence led to the death of a Trostre worker.Francis Coles, of Brynhyfryd, Five Roads, died at the company’s Llanelli works after being hit on the head by a heavy strip mill plate.
On Monday, in a prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive, the company admitted two breaches of health and safety regulations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
After hearing their powers were restricted to a £25,000 fine, magistrates at Llanelli Magistrates Court passed sentencing to Swansea Crown Court.
HSE prosecutor Simon Parrington told the court: "This accident was completely avoidable and foreseeable."
Father-of-three Mr Coles, aged 42, was a maintenance manager who had been employed at the works for 15 years.
